NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FISHERMEN

The National Association of Fishermen, New Delhi was found by Prof. Dr. B Ramachandra Rao DSC, former Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission India, Chairman Educational consultants of India and First Chairman of National Fisheries Development Advisory Board, Government of India with the Association of Dr. Valampuri John, MP from Tamilnadu, for the Upliftment of the Fishermen Communities. This Organization is spread all over India in all states, in Coastal and Inland for the Welfare of Fisherfolk of this Nation.

In fact, several State Presidents of this Association are posted as President of Fishermen wing of the National Congress party, nominated by Shri. Rahul Gandhiji, which includes Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, etc. The present Executive Chairman of the Fishermen wing of the Indian National Congress is an Ex-President of the National Association of Fishermen, Shri. V.R Sabapathy from Udupi, Karnataka.

Shri. Late Beloved Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhiji has honored our Association by attending his first meeting as Prime Minister, in the function at New Delhi Maulangar auditorium on integrated development on Fishing organized by NAF along with Shri. VP Singh former Prime Minister.

Shri Rajiv Gandhi

Shri Rajiv Gandhi was known for his contribution to international understanding, national unity, and integrity and for the upliftment of the downtrodden people. He inaugurated and addressed the “National Seminar on Integrated Development of Fishermen Community” organized by NAF from 13-16 November. 1985 at New Delhi. In his inaugural address, he termed the fishermen community as the poorest among the poor and suggested a three-point plan for the overall development of this community. On 10-3-1988, he released the inaugural issue of “Jal Shramik”, a monthly Hindi Journal of NAF devoted to the welfare of the fishermen community and development of fisheries in the country

Late Shri K. Subramaniam

NAF condoles the untimely demise, on 6-7-1991. of late Shri K. Subramaniam. the founder member and the first chairman of NAF (1979-84). He was the Chairman of the National Fisheries Advisory Board and one of the members of the Mandal Commission (Second Backward Class Commission) and took an active part for the upliftment of backward classes, especially the fishermen Community. In the death of Shri K Subramaniam, the fishermen community has lost a sincere and devoted leader. During his tenure as chairman he initiated many welfare projects under NAF It was mainly because of his keen efforts that the Union Government created the “National Welfare Fund for Fishermen” and started the “Group Insurance Scheme” for the welfare of fishermen community. He also organized several conferences and seminars to voice the demands of the poor fishermen of the country.
